Reverse Osmosis Systems in San Luis Obispo

How Reverse Osmosis Works

Reverse osmosis uses household water pressure to move water through a semipermeable membrane. This fine barrier allows water molecules to pass while reducing many dissolved substances at a point-of-use tap.

A reverse osmosis system can reduce dissolved solids, nitrates, and heavy metals. Dissolved solids include minerals, salts, metals, and other substances dissolved in water. Results depend on the system and the incoming water, so reverse osmosis isn’t an automatic answer to every water-quality concern.

Choosing Among Reverse Osmosis, Softeners & Whole-Home Filtration

These systems address different concerns and operate at different points in a home’s plumbing. Understanding those distinctions can help you identify the appropriate equipment for the problem.

The main differences include:

• Reverse osmosis: Treats water at a specific outlet, commonly through equipment installed beneath the kitchen sink.
• Water softening: Treats hardness minerals throughout the home instead of at only one faucet.
• Whole-home filtration: Treats incoming water before it reaches household fixtures.

For properties connected to the city water system, the City of San Luis Obispo publishes an annual municipal drinking water quality report. The city also adds fluoride to treated water within California’s required range of 0.6 to 1.2 parts per million, with an optimum dose of 0.7 parts per million. This public information provides useful context, but it doesn’t establish that every household needs reverse osmosis or another treatment system.

Reverse Osmosis Filter & Membrane Replacement

Reverse osmosis systems require periodic filter and membrane replacement. These components perform different roles, and replacing them helps maintain the system’s intended performance.

Service timing depends on the equipment and the water it treats. Water use, incoming conditions, and manufacturer requirements can all affect the schedule. We base our guidance on the specific system instead of applying the same unsupported interval to every installation.
